Words from the Heart for Wednesday February 14th, 2018
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 (KJV)
For God So Loved the World
Today is a day of gifts given from the heart. Of all the gifts that are given today none is so wonderful as the gift given from the Father. He gave His only Son, that we might be saved! Have you accepted that gift? If not, you can do so today. If you have already received Him, pray for three people today who need to accept this most precious gift of all.
February 14 is the name day of two saints, St Valentine of Rome and St Valentine of Terni. In the mid-19th century, there was an increase in interest in Valentine’s Day, first in the United States, then in Canada. It was promoted by manufacturers of paper lace and cards as a means of increasing their sales. Gradually, this date was seen as an occasion for a man to present gifts to a woman with whom he had or would like to have had a romantic relationship.
If there is one verse of the over 31,000 that is the favourite among Christians it must be John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It has been said that this is the Gospel in a nutshell. John includes this verse in his commentary following the story of Nicodemus meeting with Jesus and in these verses he lays down the foundation of the heart of the Good News that the Church has been presenting to the world for the past 2000 years. Our salvation rises out of God’s great love for us. In spite of our sin, God has put into place a plan that would mean the painful substitutionary death of His Son. Our sin has separated us from our Creator, and nothing we can ever do can possibly repair that broken relationship. Only a Holy God could redeem a lost people. Because of God’s love for us, He sent Jesus Christ and now offers us the gift of eternal life.
These have been words from the heart.
