The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

Psalm 119:130 (NKJV)

Your Word Gives Light

Laser surgery is a common medical procedure today. Light enters and can even remove what is restricting healthy function. The medical world is using light in so many ways. These procedures really illustrate what is the Spirit of the Lord is telling us. Don’t go through your busy days without taking time to allow the Word of God to “enter.” When the light is turned on, even the things hidden in the dark corners are seen. Our lives can be restored to health through the Word.

Not every after-market headlight available in Canada is legal. Some vehicle owners try to upgrade the lighting of their vehicles to mimic the Xenon-HID lights found on higher-end cars. These aftermarket bulbs are not HID light units, may not meet provincial or state regulations, and are, in fact, illegal. They may be brighter and more powerful, but because they have been installed in lights that are not designed for them; they cast not only a bright light (tinted blue), but an uncontrolled light. Most of the “HID-look” aftermarket light bulbs, likely the offensive ones you notice, are simply more powerful halogen bulbs coated with a blue tint. This poses an issue for the police. Law enforcement people do not have the time or manpower to pull these vehicles over and verify whether the headlights meet standards.

I was worshipping recently in a part of the world where electricity can be sporadic. During that evening service the lights flickered and went off and we were left in the dark. But not for long. All over the room cell phones came out of pockets and lights began to glow. Before long we could see well enough and the service continued unabated. We all welcomed the light as it entered that dark room. In a spiritual sense, God’s word is like those cell phones. The light it brings to the lives of those who read it and trust it is a great blessing, and God’s people welcome it. This was so with King David, who wrote Psalm 119:130: “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Like light bursting into a dark room, the entrance of God’s Word into a dark world is welcomed by all who love the Lord. Why is this the case? That question is answered in the final phrase – God’s word gives understanding to the simple. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is simple enough that even a child can understand God’s Love as expressed in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. The theologian Karl Barth was once asked what the most important truth in the world was and he answered, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” God’s word reveals God’s love and points us to Jesus, the light of the world.
