But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love.

Psalm 33:18 (NLT)

The Lord Watches Over

The Lord makes a commitment to those who choose to fear Him. We may do so and feel that we have been disadvantaged by that choice. However, the Lord’s commitment to us is to watch over us. He doesn’t leave us. We can confidently rely on Him. Don’t be swayed to try to do it a different way!

The beginning of a close collaboration between Canada and the United States in human space flight began when, in 1974, NASA sought out Canadian expertise to develop a robotic arm. It became known as the Canadarm. The relationship deepened and before long NASA invited a Canadian astronaut to participate in a space mission. The first team of Canadian astronauts was developed in 1983, and since then, Canada has recruited 12 astronauts in three campaigns, 8 of whom have participated in 16 space missions. More than 4,000 people responded to the original call for astronauts in 1983. Six were chosen, including a couple who have become household names in Canada – Roberta Bondar and Marc Garneau. In 1992 the Canadian Space Agency chose another four astronauts, among whom was the national icon Chris Hadfield.

I can’t begin to imagine the view astronauts have as they circle the earth from miles above the planet. But what an astronaut sees is nothing compared to the view that the Lord God has as He oversees His creation. King David said this in Psalm 33:18: “But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love.” Now God doesn’t miss a thing. He sees every sin, every injustice, everything good, bad and ugly. But He gives special attention to those who love Him and trust Him and put their confidence in Him. There are many in our world who have never heard of the love of God as expressed in Jesus Christ. And while I can’t begin to understand this, there are those who have heard the Gospel and who are not yet walking with Jesus. But David’s words here are a great promise to those who love God and have committed their lives to Him. We can rely on His unfailing love, David says. That is an amazing thought. There is no one who loves us like God does. His love isn’t granted because we earn it, nor is it withheld because we fail to live up to His high standard of holiness. If that was the case, we would never receive God’s love, because we often let God down. No matter what, we can trust in God’s unfailing love. That’s a promise for you today.
