Words from the Heart for Tuesday October 4th, 2016

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

Our Struggle

There is a real battle going on each day. There is an enemy who hates God and wants to harm God’s people. This battle is the reason we need God’s armour – we cannot fight the battle without His weapons. Read Ephesians 6 and take each of the Lord’s spiritual weapons as tools for your fight of faith.

Someone has posted online a list of struggles only Canadians will understand. I thought you might enjoy hearing some of them. The top of the list is “apologizing to inanimate objects that you bump into.” There is also, “the battle of texting with mittens on” and “faithfully buying roll up the rim to win every day for two months and then discovering that the winner of the grand prize dug the cup out of a garbage can.” Another struggle we Canadians face is backed up traffic due to a flock of Canada Geese who are taking their sweet time crossing the road. Then there’s the moment you realize that most of the money in your wallet is actually Canadian tire money. These are all first world struggles, of course, but as a Canadian you will understand them well.

The list I just shared are really no struggle at all and are lighthearted. However, as followers of Jesus we are involved in a struggle that is anything by lighthearted. In fact, it isn’t for the faint hearted. Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Christians are called to be constantly aware of the spiritual realm and the battle that is taking place there. The world only sees the physical realm, but we must look beyond that. Often the battle seems to be taking place here in our heart and mind, or in relationships between individuals, people groups and nations. But the foundation of our struggle to be Christ-like and to live victoriously is in the spiritual realm and so we must use the spiritual weapons that we have been given – the truths found in the Bible, prayer and fasting, and the gifts that the Holy Spirit has provided so that we can walk in victory. The next time you are struggling with something, look beyond what your eyes can see and recognize that the real battle is against the rulers, authorities and power of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. Take the spiritual weapons that the kingdom of God has provided and fight the good fight of faith.

These have been words from the heart.
