The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.

Proverbs 13:14 (NLT)

The Instruction of the Wise

A snare is a trap carefully laid and hidden on our pathway. We can be caught before we even see it is there. How can we avoid these dangers? This verse shows us the complete opposite: a life-giving fountain. What is that fountain? The instruction of the wise is that source of life. It is not necessary to be trapped. We can avoid what would bring disaster and even death to us. Thank you, Lord, for that fountain of life.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings released the list of the world’s top 200 universities and there are six Canadian schools listed. Highest in the rankings is the University of Toronto at 22nd spot. Five other Canadian universities are on the list – University of British Columbia, McGill, University of Montreal and University of Alberta, and McMaster, which shot up from 113th spot last year to 78 this year. McMaster University President said to the Globe and Mail that he credits increased spending on leading researchers.

Canada is known to have some of the best post-secondary institutions in the world, with some of the best instructors. The Bible often speaks about instruction from God’s perspective. It speaks of the need for wise instruction, which seems often so lacking in our world today. King Solomon looked at his world and wrote, in Proverbs 13:14: “The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.” Israel is located in a very arid region. One of the greatest blessings is finding a spring filled with cool, refreshing water. It brings life to the body, relief to the mind and joy to the soul. Solomon says that in a spiritual sense, wise counsel assures life, spiritual and physical. He is speaking about the counsel that comes from God’s word, of course. There is no better place to look for direction and purpose than in the counsel that comes from our Creator. If you are in need of wisdom and counsel right now, open up a Bible. There you will find the unique wisdom that will assure you of abundant and eternal life.
