Words from the Heart for Tuesday March 21st, 2017

Jesus could set people free who were afraid of death. All their lives they were held as slaves by that fear.

Hebrews 2:15 (NIRV)

He Set People Free

Fear holds many, many people in bondage. Fear of death is one of the strongest fears there is. When Jesus died and rose again He broke the power of death and of that strong fear. No longer do people need to live their lives in that way. Our salvation is a wonderful gift from God. If you have struggled with that fear of death, let the Lord give you freedom today.

Arguably, the words in Canada’s national anthem that are most commonly used elsewhere are “true north, strong and free.” O Canada was proclaimed to be the national anthem on July 1, 1980, a hundred years after it was first sung. There is no specific rule as to when it is appropriate to sing the national anthem at an event. It is up to the organizers to determine if “O Canada” will be sung at the beginning or at the end of a ceremony. As a matter of respect and tradition, it is proper to stand for the playing of “O Canada”. It is traditional for civilian men to take off their hats during the playing of the national anthem. There is no law or behaviour governing the playing of the national anthem; it is left to the good citizenship of individuals.

Does the thought of death paralyze you? Does not knowing what lies beyond the grave, if anything, scare the living daylights out of you? People spend so much time, energy and money trying to keep themselves from thinking about death – they hide it with entertainment, drugs and alcohol and sex – things that mark our society today. If we can keep our minds off thinking about eternity, we think we won’t have to face it. What people don’t realize is that no matter how hard we try to ignore it, we are held captive by the fear of not having the assurance of eternal life. God doesn’t want you to continue to be captive to that fear. Hebrews 2:15 says “Jesus could set people free who were afraid of death. All their lives they were held as slaves by that fear.” Jesus came to set you free from the fear of death. If when you lay your head on the pillow tonight, and your thoughts will go to eternity and you have no peace, I have great news for you. Jesus came to set you free from that fear. Eternal life is a gift that has been purchased for you by His death on the cross. When He died, He bore your sin and mine. And when He burst forth from the tomb, He defeated death. When you become a follower of Jesus, He sets you free from the fear of death.
