Words from the Heart for Tuesday February 27th, 2018

And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.

II Timothy 1:10 (NLT)

He Broke the Power of Death

This is an amazing announcement. Every person all over the world will someday face death. The fear of death is a very powerful fear. Our wonderful Saviour not only died for our sin but He also dealt a blow to death that breaks its hold. We are free. We have the assurance of eternal life with Him.

Back in 2014, 258,821 Canadians died. Statistics Canada keeps track of the causes of death. That year, 29.8% of deaths – almost one third – was due to malignant neoplasms or more commonly, cancer. The second most common reason for death – at 19.7% – was diseases of the heart. Stroke took 5.2% of Canadians and respiratory issues took another 4.6%. 4.5% of deaths in Canada in 2014 were due to accidents, and sadly 1.6% of deaths were due to suicide.

There are lots of things in this world that have power. Politicians, wealthy people, business leaders, Google and Facebook as examples. Sometimes that power can be challenging to others and sometimes it can be frightening, when used without compassion and justice. But there is only one power that ultimately has control over every human being – the power of death. This power was held over every person until Jesus came. And what a difference He has made. 2 Timothy 1:10 says, “And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.” When Jesus came and died and then burst forth from the tomb on that first Resurrection Day, death lost its power. No more would it hold every human being in its grip. Those who have come to faith in Jesus Christ will one day rise to spend eternity in the presence of their redeemer. This is terrific news. When you turn from your sin and reach out in faith to Jesus Christ, death loses its power in your life.
