He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together.

Colossians 1:17 (NLT)

Holding Creation Together

What an amazing Creator. He does all His work in excellence. The entire universe depends on Him. We stand in awe of Him. Pause to worship Him! Fill your part of the atmosphere He created with praise. And, the wonder continues. The Creator chose to become our Saviour!

What is it that holds Canada together? We are a nation of various regions and languages, spread across the second largest nation by geography. Many people have had ideas about what keeps this country together. In 1971, Peter Gzowski of CBC Radio’s This Country in the Morning held a competition whose goal was to compose the conclusion to the phrase: “As Canadian as…” The winning entry was “… possible, under the circumstances.” It was sent in to the program by Heather Scott.

The Bible begins with a record of God’s creating the world. The first words of the Bible are the simple and straightforward “in the beginning God created.” The apostle John begins his Gospel with some greater detail. He says this of Jesus in John 1:2, “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” This is the foundation of everything else in the Bible. There have been those throughout history who have believed in what is known as intelligent design – that God created the universe – but He simply wound it up and left it to run on its own. The Bible tells another story altogether. Colossians 1:17 says, “He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together.” God loves this world He spoke into being and continues to be fully involved in keeping it running. In spite of the impact that sin has had, this is still our Father’s world, as the old hymn says, and Paul tells us that He holds everything together. We can’t go anywhere that our Creator is absent, and this gives us the assurance that He watches over our lives, holding us together as well.

These have been words from the heart.
