Words from the Heart for Tuesday August 23rd, 2016

Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.

Colossians 4:5 (NLT)

Making the Most of Every Opportunity

We do not want to give any non-believer a reason to criticize or slander Christians because of our behaviour. We will need the wisdom of Christ to know how to act and speak when the opportunities present themselves. Ask the Lord to give you heavenly wisdom for the opportunities that arise in your day so that Christ might be glorified and no unnecessary stumbling block be put in the way of someone who does not yet know Christ.

According to the website of Global Affairs Canada, there are a number of opportunities for skilled Canadians who want to work in International Development either with the federal government or one of its partners. There are full time positions for those with post-secondary degrees and part-time and summer positions for full-time students. There are also some internship opportunities. The International Youth Internship Program is part of the Canadian government’s Youth Employment Strategy. The Internship Program provides Canadian youth with skills necessary to launch their career. A similar program for Aboriginal Youth provides opportunities for First Nations youth to participate in International internships in developing countries. As well, the Government of Canada establishes partnerships with many non-governmental organizations that carry out international development work overseas. Postings with these NGOs are usually for a two-year period.

As followers of Christ we are called to constantly share the love of Jesus and the Gospel with others. This happens through the way we live our lives and how we speak up for the Lord when we can. Paul gives this instruction to the Church in Colossae in Colossians 4:5: “Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.” When others find out we are Christians, they keep a close watch on our lives. Followers of Jesus are held to high standards in our world. The world understands that once a person confesses Jesus as Lord, they are called to love according to Kingdom of God principles. None of us are perfect, but we need to heed Paul’s instruction – we are to live wisely among those who are not yet believers. That is our responsibility. Meanwhile God is at work in people’s lives by His Spirit. We don’t see what He is doing quietly in their hearts, but He will give us opportunity to speak into their lives as we listen to the leading of the same Holy Spirit who is at work in their lives. Pray daily that the Lord would give you the wisdom to recognize the opportunities to speak into someone’s life. He will direct you as you stay sensitive to the opportunities that He makes available. Our role is simply to be willing – and sensitive to what the Lord is doing.
