The great fear of those who spend their lives on the sea is drowning. It has been so for millennia. And if you live in Canada’s arctic there is an additional fear – when exposed to Canada’s frigid waters, people often perish from hypothermia before drowning. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Inuit whale fishers designed what are known as spring-pelts, which are sealskin or seal gut stitched together so that they create a waterproof body covering that helps keep them warm and buoyant. It’s the original Canadian lifejacket. As these early lifejackets evolved they became even more insulated and buoyant and Canadian law now legislates that all who travel on water must carry a life preserver. Countless lives have been saved and fear of drowning is far less common.

In a day when many people have no idea what God’s standards of purity and holiness are, Christians are called to live lives that show their love for the Lord and His commands by living in obedience. The Bible often speaks of the fear of the Lord and some misunderstand this to mean that we need to be afraid of Him. Nothing could be farther from the truth. God loves us. He is not sitting in heaven waiting and hoping that we trip up so He can punish us. Fear here means having a sense of God’s set-apartness, which is the meaning of holiness, and His call for His people to live set apart lives that mirror His nature. The Psalmist understood this when he writes these words in Psalm 112:1-2: “Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.” What great promises here. Those who delight in God’s commands, who live their lives with an overwhelming sense of His majesty and holiness, enjoy the blessings that God pours out on His children. God calls those who love Him and have put their trust in His Son the Lord Jesus to live upright lives in the midst of a generation that is far from Him. When we do, we are blessed and so are our loved ones.
