Words from the Heart for Thursday March 9th, 2017
From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things…He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.
Matthew 16:21 (NLT)
Off to Jerusalem
Jesus prepared His disciples for the terrible things awaiting Him at the crucifixion. His death was no “surprise” yet they still found it very hard to believe all that He has told them. After He rose from the dead and they saw the empty grave, they would remember these words.
In 2014, 71,000 Canadians visited Jerusalem and currently there are some 20,000 Canadians living in that Middle Eastern nation. It is an easy and safe country to visit, and Canadian don’t need a visa to do so, just a Canadian passport with at least six months of validity left. In 2014 close to 4 million tourists came to Israel and all of them went home safe and sound. Israel is a modern western country with some of the best hospitals in the world. It actually has the highest doctor to patient ratio of any country in the world. International visitors are advised to have travel insurance that covers them in case of illness or hospitalization. Pharmacies in Israel are to be found everywhere and are very well stocked with drug store items and all the over-the-counter medicines you may need.
Thankfully many of us don’t know how we are going to die. The fact that we are is without debate, unless the Lord Jesus returns in the meantime. But Jesus knew. In fact, all that would happen in His life and death had been planned before the creation of the world. Before God created this planet, and us, He knew that sin would take its toll on every human being and on the planet in ways that must have broken His heart. But He created us anyway, and in love planned a track for our redemption. Jesus would come and live in this sin-sick world and would bear, in unbelievably painful circumstances, our sin. It is a wonder to me. The only explanation I have for why He would choose to do such a thing is because of the depth of His love for us. The Gospel tell us that Jesus had the whole thing carefully planned and knew what was coming. So Matthew says in Matthew 16:21: “From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things…He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.” If Jesus had everything planned for what was needed for our redemption to take place, don’t you think He has everything else in your life in His care too? Trust Him today.
