Words from the Heart for Thursday June 2nd, 2016
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and …wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)
Being made in God’s image means each human being has dignity, responsibility, and a capacity to mirror the Creator. Ask the Lord to help you to show honour and dignity to each person you encounter in this day.
In the mid-19th century, a century after the American Revolution had led to the original 13 British colonies becoming the foundation of the USA, British North America was a patchwork of colonial lands that included two colonies on the Pacific coast, the North-Western Territory and Rupert’s Land, the Province of Canada (previously Lower and Upper Canada), the colony of Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Each province had its own legislature and governor, and reported to the British government. However, a number of social, economic and security issues encouraged some people to consider a union or alliance. The American Civil War was over and there were fears of annexation; Britain was reluctant to spend more money on the colonies and was encouraging self-sufficiency. The first discussions about creating a new nation would soon be held.
One of the great debates of the last century and a half is creation versus evolution. Evolutionists believe that since the human race evolved from the rest of the animal kingdom, there is very little unique about us. The natural extension of this worldview is that every member of the animal kingdom has equal value and human beings have no right to special status. Those of us who believe in a loving Creator trust what Genesis 1:26-27 says: “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and …wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” The Bible could not be clearer. Mankind is unique among all of God’s creation. Only men and women are created in the spiritual image of God, and only human beings bear the likeness of God. Sin has marred that, of course, but the followers of Christ are aware of our responsibility in this world to represent our Creator and Redeemer the Lord Jesus. We are given a great responsibility – to represent God in a world that so often wants little to do with Him, and to care for His creation that He loves so much. How are you doing at this?
