Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.

Psalm 2:8 (NKJV)

The Nations as Our Inheritance

The Lord is challenging us with this invitation. He is inviting us to receive His heart for specific nations and to carry vision for them. Originally this psalm was a conversation by the Eternal God to the Son. On the cross He gave His life so that all can be saved. They are now potentially His inheritance. He’s inviting us to participate with Him in bringing them the good news of the Gospel.

According to a CBC this past June, Baby Boomers under the age of 75 are going to inherit some $750 billion dollars during the next ten years. This will be the largest transfer of wealth from one generation to another in the history of Canada. While it is true that Canadians are living longer, according to CIBC economist Benjamin Tal stated in a report released by the bank “in absolute terms, more Canadians over the age of 75 will pass away in the coming decade,” leaving a “bequest boom” of assets to their heirs that could be worth up to $900 billion, although not all of that would be inherited. He added that the elderly cohort “is not only the largest on record, but also the wealthiest.” And those who have investments have seen their net worth rise by 30% over the past decade.

The second Psalm is Messianic, and points the reader to the coming of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. It begins with a picture of the world that sounds contemporary, because the heart of men and women, the demand of power and the desire to live life with no boundaries is immutably part of the human experience. So the Psalmist speaks of the nations conspiring against God, longing to throw off what they perceive to be chains and shackles. They fail to see that when God is put first, the chains of sin and the shackles of guilt and shame are removed and we are set free and empowered to live a life that brings blessing and joy. God has a plan to redeem men and women from every nation, language and people group on the planet and He is doing so through His Son Jesus Christ. So, centuries before Jesus would be born, God makes a promise to Him, and it is recorded in Psalm 2:9: “Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.” What a wonderful promise. The same nations who have been plotting to overthrow God and His power in their lives and across the globe, will be given to Jesus as an inheritance. We see it happening in our own day, with millions of people, from every nation on the planet, putting their faith in Jesus Christ each year. Jesus is claiming his inheritance in our lifetime.
