Pay attention to my warning! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you. I will make known to you my teachings.

Proverbs 1:23 (NIRV)

Pay Attention to My Warning

What is the key to ordering our lives in life-giving ways? Here we are told plainly to pay attention when the Scripture gives us a warning. We do not know better than the Lord! When we give Him our attention He will actually make His thoughts available to us. That will give us a godly advantage and we will be protected from the way that would ultimately hurt us and others.

When I was a boy growing up during the Cold War, I remember hearing about the DEW Line. The Dew Line was the most northern of three systems of radar stations in the far northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the North Coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska, in addition to the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It was set up to detect incoming Soviet bombers during the Cold War, and provide early warning of any sea-and-land invasion. The DEW Line used conventional radar systems that could both detect and characterize an attack, while being located far to the north where they would offer hours of advanced warning. With the demise of the Soviet Union, beginning in 1988, most of the original DEW stations were deactivated. A small number was upgraded.

When we were children, we learned that the advice our parents gave us was usually for our own good. It saved us from all sorts of pain and calamity. They warned us not to touch the hot stove and not to run out between parked cars. If we heeded their warnings, life was so much easier and pain free. If this is the case when it comes to our physical lives, how much more is this the case in the spiritual realm. Proverbs 1:23 tells us, “Pay attention to my warning! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you. I will make known to you my teachings.” This is King Solomon speaking, except for Jesus the wisest man ever to live. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, King Solomon learned important spiritual lessons as he looked around him. God revealed to him principles of the Kingdom of God and he wrote them down, sharing them with the world for over three millennia. These are not simply Solomon’s warnings – they are God’s warnings about the dangers all around those who are committed to loving and following God. He warns us to avoid those who would tempt us to sin and to daily commit to living God’s way. And when we do, God promises here, He will pour out His thoughts to us and make known the principles that are the foundation to a godly life.
