Words from the Heart for Thursday April 6th, 2017

The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

1 John 3:8 (NIV)

The Devil’s Work Destroyed

We are in need of not only a gentle, good shepherd but also in need of one who will deal with our enemy. Jesus not only defends us; He also destroys the devil’s work. He has made a commitment to us as His children to do both. You are under the watchful care of this shepherd. He has fierce love for us.

Graeme Smith is a former Globe and Mail correspondent who spent much of his career in war torn parts of the world, including Afghanistan and Libya. He was recently asked what he loved about Canada, and thinking back on all the war and destruction he had experienced, he replied “Sometimes I tell the story about my early years as a journalist when I worked the overnight shift at a Toronto newspaper and listened to police scanners. My job was to monitor the city for shootings, stabbings, and other mayhem, but hours would pass with almost nothing on the radios except static and silence. I’d look out the window at the bright lights of Canada’s biggest city as millions of residents slept in peace. It’s a beautiful view, and it only gets prettier as you go further away.”

In God’s eternal plan for His Creation, His greatest goal is to destroy the destroyer. Satan has spent eons doing everything he could to usurp God’s power and steal His Glory. That will never happen of course. But he has done so much harm to all of creation and the human heart in his attempt. Every sinful thought, every act of selfish ambition, every illness and every death is the work of the devil himself. The Bible says in John 10:10 that the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. It also tells us that when he speaks, he lies, because lying is his native language. What a reputation. Not only is Satan the great deceiver, he is also the great deceived. He doesn’t understand that he has no power over Almighty God and the day is coming, soon, when his work will be destroyed. The apostle John writes in 1 John 3:8: “The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” This statement is as clear as it can be. Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil. And the devil has been busy as the deceiver and destroyer. As followers of Jesus, we are to live holy lives, empowered by Him to overcome the devil. The Lord has already destroyed the devil’s work in us. Let our lives show this to be true.
