Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you twinkling stars!
Psalm 148:3 (NLT)
The Praise of Heavenly Bodies
Do the sun and moon have a “voice” with which to praise the Lord? No, not like we, who are His created ones, made in His image. But there is a testimony that rings out from the universe itself giving all praise to the Creator God. The universe in its awesome order and movement reflects the power and wonder of the Maker God. Tonight can you find opportunity to view the “sparkling stars?” If so, you will be looking at a masterpiece made by your God.
Jasper, Alberta is often praised for its daytime views of stunning glaciers, glassy lakes and majestic mountains. But if you stay outside until the sun has set over the mountains to the west, you are in for a treat as beautiful as what you see during the day. You will be overwhelmed with breathtaking nightscapes of planets and constellations drifting overhead, with the brightest stars visible in winter. This has led to a new kind of eco-tourism that has come to be known as wilderness astronomy.
Human beings have long been mesmerized by the sky. We all gather outside to watch lunar and solar eclipses, and what Canadian hasn’t spent some time lying on their back on a warm summer night, staring up into the night sky, wondering. The sense of eternity, and the uncountable number of stars make us aware of our own insignificance and draw our thoughts and minds to things far greater, to infinity and eternity. This has always been the case, and King David writes this in Psalm 148:3, “Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you twinkling stars!” When you ponder the night sky, and the enormity of it all, are your thoughts drawn to the One who is so immense that He can speak into being all that you see in those stars and the glorious moon? David had a heart that was focused on the God He knew by faith, and loved. In the beauty of the night sky, and the provision of the sun during the day to provide light and life, David saw them praising their Creator. If the sun, moon and stars praise Him, so ought we.
These have been words from the heart.
