Stay close to wisdom, and she will keep you safe. Love her, and she will watch over you.

Proverbs 4:6 (NIRV)

Stay Close to Wisdom

Have we made friends with wisdom? What a faithful friend she will be to us. We will be both guarded and guided. We will be kept from losses due to our lack of good judgment. Put wisdom high on your list of your “best friends.” And, remember, it’s the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom.

To welcome the new millennium back in 2000, the Canadian mint held a competition and invited young artists to send in designs. The winner of the design for a coin titled wisdom, which shows a young boy and older man sitting and conversing. The artist, Cezar Serbanescu, was born in Romania in January 1983 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1990. Only 17 at the time his coin was introduced, his design was chosen from among 33,000 submitted designs.

There is a lot of knowledge these days. Canadians have one of the highest per capita levels of post-secondary education in the world. 53% of Canadians have a degree or college diploma. But having knowledge does not necessarily guarantee having wisdom. The Bible is very clear that wisdom ought to be sought after with great perseverance. King Solomon, who had been given great wisdom by the Lord, wrote this in Proverbs 4:6: “Stay close to wisdom, and she will keep you safe. Love her, and she will watch over you.” There is both a command and a promise here. The command is to stay close to wisdom. No matter where life takes us, we ought to seek God’s wisdom as a constant companion. Every decision ought to be based on the principles of the kingdom of God as laid out clearly in the Bible. And when our lives are lived in the constant presence of God’s wisdom, we can claim the two promises here – that wisdom will keep us safe from the harm that comes in not following God’s precepts, and wisdom herself will watch over us. That’s a promise worth claiming.
