Words from the Heart for Sunday September 17th, 2017

Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord.

Proverbs 8:34-35 (NIV)

Listening, Watching, Waiting

Wisdom really has so much to offer the child of God. The picture in this proverb is like someone expecting a parcel and waiting eagerly for the delivery truck. What wisdom brings to us is far greater. Life itself is found in the package of wisdom! The favour of the Lord can be found there, too. Make wisdom your priority. Keep watch for it in every area of your life.

Canadians love to watch whales. We will travel great distances to get to one coast or another in this country to see these immense and lovely creatures. Cottage Life magazine’s website lists the five best whale watching sites in Canada and they include all three coasts. Robson Bight in Telegraph Cove, and Tofino, both in BC are listed as the best places to watch whales on the west coast. In the east its Tadoussac, Quebec and the Cape Breton Highlands. And in the north – Churchill, Manitoba.

We far too often think of prayer as our time to list for God all of our praise, thanksgiving, needs and complaints. We get out our prayer list and start checking off the list like it is a daily to-do list. When we are done we feel like we’ve accomplished what we wanted for prayer and get on to other things. Meanwhile, God is trying to speak into our lives and we have totally missed the fact that prayer is a two way conversation and we need to start listening for God. King Solomon speaks to this in Proverbs 8:34-35: “Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord.” The blessings come, King Solomon says, when we stop to listen to God. Like a man or woman waiting at the king’s doorway to hear what he has to say, so we who love God are called to wait on Him for His wisdom and guidance, and for His provision each day. Take time today to listen for God to speak to you.
