Words from the Heart for Sunday May 14th, 2017

A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.

Proverbs 14:1 (NLT)

A Wise Woman

It is not easy to be a wife and mother. Today, on this Mother’s Day let us thank the Lord for all the gracious women who are dedicated to making their home the place of His presence and peace. The news is filled daily with the opposite. The Lord will not only bless but He will strengthen those who are serving the Lord as mothers. Take time today to express appreciation and encouragement to a mom you know.

The 2015 Canadian Federal Election was a first in one very interesting way. Each of the three main political parties in Canada chose a woman to lead the campaigns. They became known as the Three Wise Women. At a luncheon in Ottawa early in March, the three were honoured as “nation builders” by a group that commemorates the work of the “Famous 5” — a group of Alberta women who won legal recognition for their gender as “persons” in the 1920s. Isabel Metcalfe, chairwoman of Famous 5 Ottawa said, “This is a thrilling time for Canadian women in politics.” Her group is honouring Jenni Byrne, the Conservatives’ campaign manager, Anne McGrath, the NDP’s campaign director and Katie Telford, the Liberals’ campaign co-chair. All three of them studied at the University of Ottawa.

Wisdom is a gift from the Lord. The Bible tells us in the first chapter of James that if any of us lack wisdom we should ask the Lord and He will give it to us generously. The wisdom of the world is often nothing more than opinion. The wisdom of God comes from the heart and mind of the Creator who understands us, even in our sin, and who knows how best to give our lives meaning and purpose. This is so for both men and women, and Proverbs is filled with the wisdom of God for both. In Proverbs 14:1 Solomon writes “A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.” God gives us wisdom to build our lives, to make something good of our family, our home. The Bible tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Solomon’s point here is that that a wise woman trusts in the Lord and builds her home upon kingdom of God principles. As she does, the wisdom of God becomes evident and others around her recognize God’s wisdom as well. Jesus spoke about the wise and foolish builders, the wise man building his house on the rock, a symbol of Jesus Himself. As you build your home, your life, your family, remember the wise person does so on the foundation of Jesus Christ. When we do, we will stand strong no matter what life brings our way.
