Words from the Heart for Sunday March 11th, 2018
But God loves us deeply. He is full of mercy. So he gave us new life because of what Christ has done. He gave us life even when we were dead in sin. God’s grace has saved you.
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIRV)
He Gave us New Life
There is a wonderful message in these verses. God truly does love us deeply. We are recipients of that great mercy and grace. He has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. He has taken our punishment and given us eternal life. We can start walking with Him in that new life even now.
The first Canadian babies to be born in 2018 didn’t wait long before making an appearance, as two Toronto hospitals reported delivering newborns right at the stroke of midnight. Both St. Michael’s Hospital and Humber River Hospital announced early Monday that they had welcomed new babies at exactly 12 a.m. on New Year’s Day. At the Humber Hospital, the New Year’s baby’s birth: a boy named Philip, was closely followed by his twin sister Victoria, who arrived seven seconds later.
There is a principle or hermeneutics – the study of God’s word – that you should never build a belief on one verse. It is too easy to take it out of context. Biblical truth is always repeated over and over in Scripture. This is certainly the case in a central teaching of God’s word. It is best known in John 3:16 – for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. That truth is supported by Paul in Ephesians 2:4-5: “But God loves us deeply. He is full of mercy. So he gave us new life because of what Christ has done. He gave us life even when we were dead in sin. God’s grace has saved you.” I love how simply Paul puts this – but God loves us deeply. What a blessing to know that in spite of our sin and rebellion against Him, God has never stopped loving us. And because He is filled with mercy, He has given us new life. Have you experienced God’s love for you? You can, by believing what Paul says here and reaching out in faith to receive the gift of eternal life that His love for you has provided through Jesus.
These have been words from the heart.
