Words from the Heart for Sunday July 23rd, 2017

For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.

Psalm 97:9 (NIV)

Most High Over all the Earth

Words like “greater” and “supreme” belong to our God. Other people in the Scriptures are seen worshipping other gods. That is still true today. However, our God is the greatest One and He is worthy of our worship. No other god is like Him.

If you want to experience some of the most majestic trees anywhere on the planet, you can do so right here in Canada. When the people of British Columbia speak of their “big trees” they are not exaggerating. The giant redwood, sequoia and Douglas Firs are like nothing else in Canada. They tower up to 100 meters high, dwarfing the tallest trees you will find in the rest of Canada. And where should you go to get the best view of these giants? I would suggest Cathedral Grove, easily accessible off the highway near Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The Douglas fir trees there are over 800 years old. There are few things more ancient in North America, making these trees not only the tallest, but also the some of the oldest living things on the continent.

People make gods out of so many things. We don’t live in a part of the world where polytheism is common, although in our increasingly multi-cultural nation, you may live next to someone who is a polytheist. But just because worshipping idols isn’t common here, at least not publicly, every single human being worships something. Jesus said that where our treasure is, there is our heart as well. And whatever our heart is focused on, that is our idol. There is only one place where our hearts should be focused, because while human beings make gods out of so many things, there is only one true God. Psalm 97:9 says this: “For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.” The gods we create are in reality smaller than we are. Nothing in this world has anything eternal about it. Our idols change over time as we lose interest and discover just how fleeting and powerless they are. But the God of the Bible, who reveals Himself through Jesus Christ, is high above all the earth. In light of His power and authority, His majesty and glory, everything else fades to insignificance. He alone is God. Take time today to examine your life. In what are you truly putting your trust and hope? If Jesus Christ isn’t Lord of your life, your god is far too small.
