Words from the Heart for Sunday January 22nd, 2017

Lord, you alone are everything I need. You make my life secure.

Psalm 16:5 (NIRV)

A Secure Life

Deep settled security is something we all long for. Sometimes even from childhood we have been failed by those we trusted. We learn very young that we cannot make it on our own. It is a wonderful discovery that the Lord is available to us. He does not leave us with our needs unmet. As we belong to Him He gives us the security that we must have to thrive. That’s exactly the kindness of the Lord we serve.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency website, since 2001, air carriers have been required by law to submit advance electronic information on their passengers and crew at the time of departure. Similar requirements were put in place for marine cargo in 2004 and air cargo in July 2006. No such legal requirements apply to commercial shipments by land. However, the Agency receives advance electronic cargo information on about 99 percent of rail shipments and 12 percent of highway shipments. The Agency determines that an individual or commercial shipment is high-risk if there is a substantial likelihood of non-compliance with the Canadian laws or regulations it enforces. The Agency considers many factors, including past seizures, intelligence information, improper reporting of goods imported, the extent of criminality, and the point of origin of the traveler or goods.

People put their hope in all kinds of things – their bank account, their good name, their education, their family, their fame. But all of these things can be lost in a heartbeat. Ask anyone who has lived through an earthquake or hurricane just how tenuous life can be. Jesus spoke about the difference between the man who built his house on the sand and the man who built his house on the rock. When the storms of life came up, the man who built his house on the sand lost everything. This is a picture of the person who trusts in the things of the world, and that is most people in our society. But the man who builds his house on the rock solid foundation of Jesus Christ has the assurance that no matter what comes his way, he will stand strong. I love how Psalm 16:5 puts it: “Lord, you alone are everything I need. You make my life secure.” What a profoundly simple statement of faith. We need nothing else except Jesus Christ. He is the provider of all we need for this life and eternity. He alone makes our life secure. We never have to wonder if He is able to hold us secure. The One who spoke the mountains into existence surely has the power to keep us standing strong, no matter what life throws at us. In what are you trusting? Well, not what, but whom? Have you put your complete trust in Jesus Christ? He alone will make your life secure.

These have been words from the heart.
