The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)

The Fear of the Lord

The Lord is giving us a very important beginning: the fear of the Lord. Our reverence for Him is the foundation of wisdom for every day this new year. How can you express your love and reverence for Him today?

“Happy New Year! When Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar back in 1582, it was decided that that year would begin on January 1 and end on December 31. It took some time for the world to accept the Gregorian calendar, with acceptance beginning in western Europe. As Europe’s global influence heightened, the use of the Gregorian calendar spread around the world. The Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian calendar which had been introduced by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The problem with the Julian calendar was that it needed too many leap days to keep the vernal equinox on March 21 each year, the date established in 325 AD by the Council of Nicea. The Gregorian calendar provided a much better alignment with the seasons.

Happy New Year. 2017 is underway, a new year and a clean slate. What is going to happen this year? What will your life look like in 364 days? None of us knows, of course. We don’t even know what is going to happen later today. We followers of Jesus Christ have the promises of God’s Word. One that is most appropriate, a perfect New Year’s Day Scripture verse, is Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” At the beginning of this year, the Bible speaks about the beginning of wisdom. The world’s wisdom is the polar opposite to this. Those who don’t have a relationship with Jesus have no sense of God’s wonder and awe. So there is no assurance of the future and no true wisdom. Our worldview is shaped by our faith. When we come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ everything changes, including how we see the world, ourselves and the future. We have the assurance that if God could love us enough to provide all we need for salvation, then He surely has the power and authority to guide us through all the days that lie ahead. Be wise. Trust in the Lord Jesus. Put your hope in Him alone and invite Him to be Lord over every day that lies ahead in this new year. He will bless you with the peace that He alone can give – today and each day in 2017.
