For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,…

Psalm 8:5-6 (NKJV)

A Little Lower

God celebrates mankind as His highest creation. We are made only lower than the angels He has created. We stand in awe at the value He places on us. Also, He gives us authority and calls us into partnership with Him over all that He has made.

The Province of Lower Canada was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. It covered the southern portion of the modern-day Province of Quebec, Canada, and the Labrador region of the modern-day Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809. The prefix “lower” in its name refers to its geographic position farther downriver from the headwaters of the St. Lawrence River than its contemporary Upper Canada, present-day southern Ontario.

Unlike the angels that have become a part of popular culture, the angels in the Bible always brought fear when they showed themselves to human beings. These created beings spend their time around the throne of God and dwell constantly in His majesty. Which makes the statement of King David in Psalm 8:5-6 so profound: “For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet.” Human beings are not a product of chance. We are not simply the result of millions of years of evolution. We have been created, David says, just a little lower than the angels. Like the angels, we have been crowned with glory and honour. But even more than the angels, we have been given authority over God’s creation and have been called to govern it. What a privilege is ours… but also a responsibility. It is only the teaching of the Bible that gives human beings great value and worth. Live today aware of your worth.
