Words from the Heart for Sunday December 31st, 2017

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Carry it on to Completion

This past year has brought many opportunities to learn more about the Lord. We have walked through many challenges but have seen the faithfulness of our God. As the year comes to a close we can confidently expect Him to carry on His work in our lives. Make a list of how you have grown this past year. And take time to thank Him in advance for what He has prepared.

The Canadian Pacific Railway would not have been completed were it not for an influx of workers from China. Around 15,000 Chinese labourers, working in harsh conditions for little pay, suffered greatly and historians estimate that at least 600 died. Their employment caused controversy, particularly in British Columbia, where politicians worried about the potential economic and cultural impact of this influx of Chinese workers. The line through to the Pacific coast was completed on November 7, 1885, with the driving of the last spike.

The Lord has brought another year to a conclusion. It just seems like yesterday that we were looking forward to 2017 and wondering what the year would hold. Would it be filled with blessing or challenges? Would it bring us joy or grief? As usual, this year has probably brought you some of each. There have been times of great joy and moments when you were overcome with the majesty of God. And there have been times when your heart was broken and you sensed the presence of God’s love and grace through the mist of pain and grief. In fact, all of life is like this and will be until we reach the end of our lives. As a follower of Christ, we can proclaim, as Paul did in Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Just as the Lord has brought you through this year, right to its completion, so He will bring you through all of life. As He begun a good work in you?
