Words from the Heart for Sunday April 30th, 2017

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

The Lord is Close to the Brokenhearted

Perhaps someone has told you, “I know just how you feel.” However, no one actually knows how someone else is feeling. We can even be frustrated when people try to tell us they understand. Sometimes people walk away from us when we need them most because they just don’t know how to solve the situation we face. Our God is not like that. He is close to the brokenhearted. He does more than understand. He rescues us when our spirit is crushed.

Back in 2012, Erin, a 25-year-old single mother from Brampton, married the man of her dreams. She had met Jorge while on a vacation in Cuba and had fallen in love. They communicated by phone – he used a phone Erin had supplied and she racked up $4000 in phone bills. She returned to Cuba for their wedding, and then came back to Canada to get ready for him to arrive once his immigration papers were in place. On January 12, 2013, 33-year-old Jorge arrived at Pearson airport in Toronto, and embraced Erin. Three days later, after kissing Erin goodbye when she left for work, Jorge walked out the door, taking with him all the clothes she had bought for him, along with $1000 tip money she had been saving up. He has never returned, leaving Erin brokenhearted and deep in debt.

Thankfully, these kinds of heartbreaking stories are rare. Canada Immigration said that Erin’s story is one in 10,000. But if you are Erin, the odds don’t matter. What Jorge did to her is inexcusable and devastating. All of us at some time in our lives are faced with things that break our hearts. It might be a son or daughter who makes some bad decisions and finds themselves in deep trouble. Maybe it is the death of a love one, or the loss of a job. Whatever it is that breaks our heart, there is a wonderful promise in the Bible for just such a time. Psalm 34:18 tells us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” Ironically, it is during times of heartbreak that the Lord seems far away. These are some of the loneliest times in our lives. Thankfully our faith doesn’t depend on feelings. Just because we feel alone doesn’t mean that we are. God promises to draw close to those who are going through deep waters. And the deep waters will not overwhelm the man or woman whose spirits are crushed. God knows when you are hurting. He promises to come alongside you when you are in pain. David testified in Psalm 23 that even in the valley of the shadow of death, God was there. He is with you too.

These have been words from the heart.
