Words from the Heart for Sunday April 1st, 2018
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.
Mark 16:6 (NKJV)
He Is Risen!
This announcement from the angel who greeted the women at the tomb changed everything! They came expecting to find the body of their precious Jesus. The announcement rings out today: Our Redeemer lives! No other religious leader can make that claim. Jesus is alive. The women went quickly to spread the good news. Let us also announce that there is a living Saviour wanting all to come to Him.
Back in the 1920s, a giant concrete mausoleum was built beside the cemetery in Port Dover, Ontario. Inscribed on a flagstone above the entranceway was the Latin expression “sic transit gloria mundi” – Thus passeth the glory of the world. For almost a century travelers on Ontario Highway 6 passed the mausoleum, most unaware that no one was ever interred in the massive building. Almost as soon as the mausoleum was completed, the Great Depression hit and the owners went bankrupt before any bodies were laid to eternal rest.
There is an empty tomb just outside the ancient walls of Jerusalem. It was filled once, with just one body – that of Jesus Christ, the son of the Living God. In fulfillment of prophecy, He had stepped into our world, destined to die. The Redeemer of the world would lay down His life as a sacrifice, bearing the sin of the world. As with all human beings who die, His body was prepared for burial and laid in the ground – in a tomb. Ordinarily that would have been the end of it. But there was nothing ordinary about Jesus – not His life, not His death and not what happened next. Mark 16:6 introduces us to an angel, standing outside that now famous tomb: “But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.” These simple words have changed the world. The tomb was empty. Jesus, who had died, was now alive, unleashed in the world, transforming the life of all who trust in Him.
These have been words from the heart.
