…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)

Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus

Are you weak and burdened? Do you feel tempted to sin? Like many who have gone before you, keep looking at Jesus. He faced temptation yet obeyed, not giving up even when death on a cross was in view. Ask the Lord to give you the same resolve in your trial as was given to Christ.

During World War 2, Canada produced a variety of radio programs and movies to encourage the sale of War Bonds. One such series was titled Nazi Eyes on Canada and was a five-part Canadian radio play broadcast by CBC Radio in the fall of 1942. Each of the stories focuses on a real family from a different province of Canada (Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Saskatchewan), then portrays an imagined horrible future for the family if Nazi Germany were to win the Second World War. The cast included such luminaries as Orson Welles, Vincent Price, Helen Hayes, Judith Evelyn, and war correspondents Quentin Reynolds, House Jameson, Katherine Raht and Lorne Greene. The episodes were made in co-operation with the National War Finance Committee who was established to promote the sale of War Bonds.

It has been said that the longer a couple is married they more they start to look like each other. While this is probably an old tale, there is truth to the principle in the spiritual realm. We really do look spiritually like what we spend our lives focused on. If we spend all of our time focused on sinful things, before long our hearts will be filled with darkness and depravity. But if we keep our eyes focused on the godly things, our hearts will be filled with His light. Hebrews 12:2 makes this very clear. It says “…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus is the author or pioneer of our faith. Our redemption was His idea and He was the One who set about to accomplish all He has for us. He chose to step out of heaven and onto this planet. He chose the cross in order to take upon Himself the punishment that our sins deserve. He was the one who birthed the Church on the day of Pentecost. And if He was able to set all of this into place, how much more is He able to bring to completion our salvation? So keep your eyes fixed on Him today and watch Him grow your faith towards His goal of perfecting it.
