Words from the Heart for Saturday March 10th, 2018

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Acts 4:12 (NIV)

No Other Name

The word of God is firm that there is only one way to have eternal life. Some people may falsely teach that there are many ways to God. But the Gospel clearly declares that there is no other name but the name of Jesus. This does not restrict people from coming to God. Rather, this opens up the way for all to come through that name to eternal life. It’s a wonderful message for the whole world.

If you are looking for a uniquely Canadian name for your baby, you might consider the name Mackenzie. It is the name of Canada’s largest and longest river system and its name belongs to three of Canada’s Prime Ministers: Alexander Mackenzie, Sir Mackenzie Bowell and William Lyon Mackenzie King. The name has Scottish roots, and can be used for either a boy or a girl. It means ‘son of Kenneth” in Gaelic. It was the 21st most popular baby name in Canada in 2016.

The Christian faith is narrow, which doesn’t make it popular in our day of inclusivity. The spirit of the age is that everyone is right, and truth is relative, being whatever it is to you. To declare that Jesus is the only way to eternal life, and only by trusting Him is heaven assured is anathema to the modern mind in western culture. But it is a foundational principle of the Kingdom of God. In his Pentecost sermon, now filled by the Holy Spirit, Peter declares this in Acts 4:12: “””Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” These are two really exclusive statements. First, salvation is found in no one else. In a world filled with religions, to state so strongly that only Jesus is the way to God is not popular. But I have seen thousands of people around the world trust Christ and without fail they testify that Jesus alone has given then the peace and joy that they have found in nothing else. Which supports the second exclusive statement – there is no other name.

These have been words from the heart.
