You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.

Psalm 91:5 (NIV)

No Fear

Even during the night, the Lord watches over His people. As you wake up or lie down today, thank God for His protection and watchful eye over you while you sleep.

Miss World Canada is a fearless critic of China’s treatment of religious minorities. Anastasia Lin was labeled “persona non grata” by China in December 2015 and was prevented from traveling to that country for the month long Miss World competition. She didn’t find out that she was being barred from entering China until she was ready to board a connecting flight to Hong Kong. Anastasia moved to Canada from China when she was 13 and hasn’t been back since, even though her father lives there. She often speaks out against the Chinese government’s treatment of groups like the Falung Gong, which she practices and the Tibetan and Uigher peoples. Lin was moved by victims she met through her work in human rights films, including those who have faced religious persecution and spent time in forced labour camps.

Have you ever had a night where you have tossed and turned, sleep refusing to come? Maybe it was brought on by something difficult you were facing the next day. Or a family issue or financial crisis. Your mind is racing with fear or guilt and night seems to last forever. Have you ever had a day where fear about something has paralyzed you and it is impossible to get anything accomplished? We all have had times like that. Fear of the unknown, or apprehension about something in the future, can lead to sleepless nights and fearful days. King David experienced these night terrors and day fears. And he discovered that his God was with him through them all. So he testifies in Psalm 91:5: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.” The foundation of this verse is the first verse in the chapter. David is speaking to those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty. In our case, it is all who have put their faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. The Lord Jesus doesn’t sleep. He is with us and aware 24 hours a day and is as close as a prayer. The Bible says that perfect love casts out all fear, and as we abide in the perfect love of Jesus Christ, all fear dissipates and we are filled with His peace, no matter what the circumstances around us.

These have been words from the heart.
