Words from the Heart for Saturday January 6th, 2018
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying,“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV)
Through the ages people have questioned if it really was possible for a star to guide the wise men from the East to Bethlehem. But, when we realize that the Lord who made the stars certainly could command their movement to do His will, there’s no more doubt.
In May of 2017, the Canadian Senate released an illustrated children’s book, part of a suite of promotional materials designed to sell Canadians on the virtues of the Red Chamber after years of scandal and bad press. The book is titled The Wise Owls and tells the story of Canadian democracy through the use of forest-dwelling animals, described as a “whimsical fable that is sure to appeal to children of all ages.” The book was written to provide senators with a tool to use when they visit schools across the country.
I have always been intrigued by the wise men – the magi that arrived from the east sometime within the first couple of years after Jesus was born. Throughout history, God had been revealing His redemption story through the people of Israel. God had chosen the people of Israel as His own and it was through them that He would provide the Saviour, the Lord Jesus. And the story of Jesus’ birth is completely Jewish. But into the story step these Persian magi. Wealthy and powerful men in the midst of a story about carpenters and shepherds. At first they seem so out of place. But not to God. His plan all along has been to reach men and women from every nation, tribe and tongue, rich, poor and middle class. So Matthew 2:1-2 says. “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.’” Have you worshipped him?
These have been words from the heart.
