Words from the Heart for Saturday April 1st, 2017

May grace and peace come to you from Jesus Christ. He is the faithful witness, so what he has shown can be trusted. He was the first to rise from the dead. He rules over the kings of the earth. Glory and power belong to Jesus Christ who loves us! He has set us free from our sins by pouring out his blood for us.

Revelation 1:5 (NIRV)

The Distance Bridged

What a huge distance between the exalted One who rules over the kings of the earth and all of us. Yet this Ruler bridges that distance with the power of His own blood.

The first serious discussion about a fixed link across the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island was held in 1870 when the province’s railway system was developed. Nothing came of the talks and no further discussion would be held until elections in the 1950s and ‘60s. Finally, in 1987, with ferry and rail service getting expensive, Public Works Canada called for formal proposals. It would take some five years before construction began and only after a plebiscite was held on PEI, which passed with 59.4% in favour. The official opening for the bridge took place on May 31, 1997, following a nationally televised ceremony. The celebrations included a sail-past of the Bluenose II and several Canadian Coast Guard ships, a flyover by the Snowbirds, and an emotional farewell to the beloved ferries which made their final crossings that evening.

Much of earth seems so far from heavenly. Individuals are emotionally scarred and spiritually broken. Far too many children grow up in fear and want. The world is wracked by violence and in search of peace; people become dependent upon things that only bring them harm. For many, heaven, if they believe it exists at all, is a pipe dream, so far from their reality that is seems a cruel tempter. This is why the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Good News. Jesus bridged the distance between the purity of heaven and the tragedy that so often marks our world. In Revelation 1:5 we read “May grace and peace come to you from Jesus Christ. He is the faithful witness, so what he has shown can be trusted. He was the first to rise from the dead. He rules over the kings of the earth. Glory and power belong to Jesus Christ who loves us! He has set us free from our sins by pouring out his blood for us.” As the book of Revelation opens, Jesus is seen in all of His heavenly glory. But He who for a time took up residence in our world, brings heaven to earth and earth to heaven. John tells us that He sits in heaven ruling there, but touches the hearts and lives of all here on earth who reach out to Him in faith. He alone bridges heaven and earth.
