A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.
Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV)
Like a Medicine
This verse is true! It is sometimes said that “laughter is the best medicine.” Not everything is a “laughing matter.” However, we can allow the Lord to work in our hearts and bring us the joy that comes from casting the burden upon Him. We can create an atmosphere of healing with that joy. The healing begins on the inside and then spreads to the outside. Try it today! You will see the healing work of what a merry heart can accomplish.
Frank Buckley died in February last year. One of the products he successfully marketed has become a Canadian icon. What Canadian doesn’t recognize the tagline, “It tastes awful. But it works!” Buckley’s cough medicine had been created by his pharmacist father 100 years ago, but it never took off until Frank started to pitch it back in the 1980s. When the famous ad campaign started, Buckley’s had just 2% of the market share. A decade later it was the top selling cough medicine in Canada.
I am blessed with a sense of humour. Whether it’s a GOOD sense of humour is up for debate, apparently, my wife often saying about one of my jokes, “just because I didn’t laugh doesn’t mean I didn’t get it.” I just chalk it up to the fact that she and I are very different and her sense of humour isn’t as well defined as mine is. The Bible speaks about the good that a happy heart does to the whole body. One of my favourite verses in the Bible is Proverbs 17:22: “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Our Creator has to have a great sense of humour – just look at the duck-billed platypus. The poor creature looks like the Lord put him together using spare parts. One of the marks of a follower of Christ is joy – it is a fruit of the Spirit after all. When our heart is joyful, it has a positive effect on our entire being. And true joy comes only when our hearts have been redeemed by Jesus and filled with His Holy Spirit. He is the best medicine.
