Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)

Fight the Good Fight

Are you tempted to give up? Don’t quit now! In your life and your service to others, remember that God has been at work before you responded to His goodness and grace. So keep pressing on!

Nellie McClung fought the good fight for Women’s suffrage in Canada. Marriage, five children, and a successful writing career did not stop Nellie McClung from campaigning for women’s rights. Nellie was a committed follower of Jesus Christ and it was her deep faith and devotion to her family that drove her concern for less fortunate women. Women and children were suffering because of neglect, poverty, alcohol abuse and overwork. She wrote that, “”The real spirit of the suffrage movement is sympathy and interest in the other woman, and the desire to make the world a more homelike place to live in.”” Women’s suffrage was not a popular cause in Canada. Men and women were frightened that women’s rights would lead to the breakdown of home and family. McClung calmed these fears with charm, wit and a wonderful sense of humour.

Some things are just worth fighting for. The Bible often speaks of godly men and women being called to fight for justice and righteousness. It isn’t a physical fight, of course. Peacemakers are honoured in the kingdom of God, Jesus teaches, and will be called the children of God. 1 Timothy 6:12 puts things into perspective: “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” There is a spiritual battle that each of us who love Jesus Christ are called to be aware of and take part in. It is the good fight of faith. The battle takes place in our minds and our hearts and the weapons are not the weapons of this world, but of the Kingdom of God. We are given as weapons the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. We are given armour – the breastplate of righteousness and the helmet of salvation to name just two. These protect our heart and our mind. Whether you recognize it or not, you are in a battle today. It is a good fight – and we will be victorious when we walk in faith, trusting God for his protection and his provision for the battle. Keep pressing on. God is with you. Don’t be defeated, but in faith claim the victory that is yours in Christ.
