Words from the Heart for Monday October 16th, 2017
Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.
Proverbs 14: 26 (NIV)
A Secure Fortress
Parents love to give gifts to their children. They eagerly want to enroll them in sports teams or music lessons. They desire the very best for their children and will often sacrifice to make it possible. However, the very best gift a parent can give is to love the Lord wholeheartedly and be an example of walking in the fear of the Lord. This lifestyle brings lasting benefit to their family.
One of the most popular historical forts in Canada is Fort Rudd Hill in Victoria, BC. Its popularity is based not only on the annual Historical Military Encampment held each May, but also on its stunning views. With the coastline and mountains as a backdrop, the fort and nearby Fisgard Lighthouse offer some fantastic photo ops. Built in the 1890s, this coastal artillery fort was intended to defend Victoria and the Esquimalt Naval Base, and today visitors can explore the underground magazines, command posts, guardhouses, and barracks.
Life is not always easy. And there is no promise in God’s word that those who love the Lord Jesus and are following Him will be spared from the hardships that life brings our way… with one major caveat and it is found in Proverbs 14:26: “Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.” The people of God are blessed to have a place to run to when life gets overwhelming. The Lord Jesus promises us that He will never leave us or forsake us. We have His words in the Great Commission in Matthew 28 that He will be with us to the end of the age. He doesn’t put a physical fence around us to protect us from harm. Christians face physical, emotional and psychological pain as surely as non-Christians do. But we have a place to go when the trauma of life impacts us. The Lord Jesus is present in us and with us through the abiding Holy Spirit. If you are facing trials and challenges right now, run to Jesus. He will be a secure fortress – for you and for your family.
