Words from the Heart for Monday November 28th, 2016

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.

Acts 17:30-31 (NIV)

The Command to Repent

There is a day and time coming when everyone will have to give an account whether or not they knew and trusted Jesus Christ. If you trust Him as Saviour, is there someone with whom you need to share this life-changing message? Ask God to give you boldness to share the Good News!

I suspect that most Canadians are not aware that Canada’s military has a commando force. Canadian Special Forces Command is made up of 5 different units. There are the ultra-secret JTF2, protecting Canadians from terrorism at home and abroad and the Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit, tasked with dealing with nuclear, biological and chemical threats. Then there are the Commandos of CSOR and dedicated air support for all of these troops, the 427 Special Operations Aviation Unit. Finally, there is the school that teaches the skills required for potential deployment, CSOTC, The Canadian Special Operations Training Centre. Canada’s Commandoes are tasked with some of the most challenging missions the Chief of Defense Staff can order. Like their current mission in Northern Iraq, which is a “non-combat” role of training and assisting the Kurdish Peshmerga army in their war against ISIS.

Repentance is more than simply being sorry for sin. It is the decision to be different, to make a 180 degree turn in how we are living our lives. It is a necessary part of salvation. Until we see ourselves as sinners in need of a Saviour we will never see the need for repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. So the apostle Paul says this in Acts 17:30-31: “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” There is coming a day when Jesus will be the judge of the world. Paul says that it is the resurrection of Jesus Christ that guarantees that He will be the judge. Those who repent of their sins and have trusted Jesus Christ will never be judged according to their works. Romans 8:1 says that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. This is the heart of the Gospel. God is just and can’t simply ignore sin. So either our sin will be removed by faith in Jesus Christ, or it will one day the sinner will be judged. Jesus offers forgiveness of sin to all who come to Him in repentance and faith.
