Words from the Heart for Monday May 8th, 2017
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
Psalm 37:23 (NLT)
The Lord Directs
Psalm 37 speaks of the confidence we have as we commit our way to the Lord. We are frequently reminded throughout the psalm that committing our way to the Lord is a much better choice than fretting over the actions and choices of other people. Even our steps can be directed by the Lord. He delights in even the smallest details of our lives. Choose His path today. You won’t be disappointed.
When the First World War began in 1914, the Royal Canadian Navy was still in its infancy. It consisted of less than 350 men and two ships, HMCS Rainbow and HMCS Niobe. The Canadian government decided that Canada’s war effort would be best concentrated on the army. The share of the Royal Canadian Navy in defense though small was, nevertheless, important. The RCN assumed responsibility for such services as examining and directing shipping in Canadian ports; radio-telegraph services vital to the Admiralty’s intelligence system, and the operation of an auxiliary fleet which engaged in mine sweeping and patrolling operations. In 1916, when the threat of submarine warfare spread to North American waters, the Canadian government undertook, at the request of the British Admiralty, to build up a patrol force of 36 ships.
We don’t hear the word delightful used very much these days. It seems that there are fewer things that delight us than perhaps in the past. The definition of delightful is giving great pleasure in a sense of purity. Much of what the world perceives as offering pleasure is not delightful. But in the kingdom of God, all pleasure is delightful. It never leads to guilt and shame and honours the Lord. There is a wonderful verse in Psalm 37 that speaks to this. Psalm 37:23 says “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” When our lives are being directed by the Lord, there is much pleasure. Within our hearts is the sense of peace and joy that comes in an intimate relationship with our Creator God through faith in Jesus Christ. He leads us into situations that are pleasing to our redeemed nature and that draw us closer to Him. And when we are walking in these pleasures, He finds delight in us. The picture is that of the earliest chapters of the Bible, before sin entered into the world, and the Lord walked daily with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It was a delightful time of perfect communion between God and His creation. God offers us that sense of delightful intimacy through the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. Sin is removed when we put our faith in Him and we enter into His delightful presence.
These have been words from the heart.
