Words from the Heart for Monday June 19th, 2017
God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: power, O God, belongs to you; unfailing love, O Lord, is yours. Surely you repay all people according to what they have done.
Psalm 62:11-12 (NLT)
God Has Spoken Plainly
This mighty God we serve has a wonderful record. We can freely celebrate what He has done. Power and unfailing love are words that describe Him. So much more can be said, but let us begin our praise to Him there. What words would you add to the list of how we can speak about Him?
As we approach Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1, we continue our biographies of Canada’s Fathers of Confederation. As we mentioned a few days ago, there were two Fathers of Confederation named John Hamilton Gray, the younger from New Brunswick and the elder from Prince Edward Island. PEI’s Gray was born and educated on the island before spending 20 years in the British army in India and Africa. On return home, he was elected to the provincial assembly and served as premier until 1865. He was chairman of the Charlottetown conference, and a strong proponent of his island province joining Canadian Confederation, so when the PEI legislature rejected the terms of Confederation, Gray retired from politics. He died in August of 1887, having lived long enough to see his beloved island become Canada’s seventh province.
For many people, God, if He exists at all, is distant, and silent. In fact, the concept of God being with us, speaking into our lives, walking with us and filling our lives, is uniquely Christian. In every other religious system, God is far off and life is to be lived in such a way that we hope to get His attention and maybe He will notice us and be pleased with us. What a contrast to the God of the Bible. The entire record of God in the Bible is of His passionate longing to come to us and commune with us. God has spoken through His Word, and when we read it, we clearly hear Him speaking into our lives. Psalm 62:11-12 says this: “God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: power, O God, belongs to you; unfailing love, O Lord, is yours. Surely you repay all people according to what they have done.” What a beautiful testimony from King David. He has no doubt that God has spoken to him, and we can testify that this is true, since through David, God has spoken to us. How many times, as we have read the Psalms, have we heard God clearly speak into our hearts and minds? And when God has spoken, His words have come with power and unfailing love. Allow God to speak into your life today, and His power and love will fill you too.
These have been words from the heart.
