The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NIV)

The website Knowing Canada is a rich resource for new Canadians, but would also be helpful for parents teaching their children some practical things they will need to be successful adults. For example, the section on houses not only gives advice on how to purchase a home, with or without using a realtor, but also gives advice on painting a house, moving in Canada and house cleaning. The Knowing Canada website also gives practical advice on getting an education and finding a job. In scanning the website, I learned something new. The government of Canada uses what is known as the Priority Occupation List from with the occupations that are deemed most desirable are included. Those who have the skills that are included on the Priority Occupation List will have the best incentives when moving to Canada.

The spirit of our age is one of hopelessness. Secular humanism teaches us that we are product of chance and that there is no life beyond the grave. We become nothing more than the food for worms. The educational system teaches this, which is why they also need to spend so much time dealing with courses on self-worth. The Bible teaches something altogether different and it speaks to the worth of the individual. The entire content of the Biblical narrative is that human beings are lovingly created by God and who, in spite of our failings and sin, loves us immensely. Jeremiah 1:4-5 teaches “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” God spoke into Jeremiah’s heart and gave him the assurance that even before Jeremiah was born, while the prophet was still in his mother’s womb, God knew him and had a plan for his life. This is why Christians are unabashedly pro-life. We understand that life is sacred, even life in the womb. Even before we come out into this world, God has formed us and loves us and wants His best for us. Jesus said that the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy but He came that we might have life to the full. That is good news that our world needs to hear.

These have been words from the heart.
