Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power!
Psalm 98:1 (NLT)
Sing a New Song to the Lord
When we read about the “right hand” of the Lord in our Bibles, we are reading about the Lord’s power and His authority. And, our God has not changed. He still is doing wonderful things and is bringing mighty victories. We need a fresh demonstration of His saving power. The Lord is continuing to do these wonderful deeds in our world today.
There have been many projects launched this year in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. One of them was a new rendition of a 25 year old song written by Jeannette Arsenault, whose roots are Acadian, but who now calls Belleville, Ontario home. She has performed her song, This is My Canada, or Mon Cher Canada in French, for Queen Elizabeth, at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and Athens and at the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, to name a few. She had a dream to create a new version of her old song, and when she met New Brunswick based music producer Don Coleman, her dream became a reality. He gathered a team of musicians, who together have won 6 grammys and 13 Juno awards, and the old song came to life again.
Music has traditionally flowed out of a heart that has been touched by the Lord. As you study the history of music, the greatest music was written by those whose hearts have been transformed by God, and whose desire was to express their praise and gratitude for all that He has done. Every generation of followers of Jesus have written music that has expressed their love for Him. It has always been so. The ancient words of the Psalmist express this in His generation. Psalm 98:1 says “Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power!” Christian music flows out of a heart that has been touched by the Lord. It also expresses all He has done for us. The Bible says that God is spirit and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth. Christian music does this so well. The music flows from the heart. The words come from thoughtful minds that desire to share with others what the Lord has done. In the Psalmist’s case, God has won a great victory and has saved His people. This is a good theme for a new song. He does the same in our lives. So take time today to express in song all that the Lord has done in your life. He will be honoured!
