For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Psalm 84:11 (NKJV)

No Good Thing Will He Withhold

This is an excellent verse to memorize! The Lord is Himself a shield for us. He is committed to us as His own who choose His ways. Our enemy may try to discourage us and lie to us that our God is keeping something back from us. We can rejoice instead in the truth of His gracious love.

Canada is a nation with a variety of social programs. Because of Canada’s political system, many of the social programs are run by the provinces, although there are some national programs such as Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Plan. Canadians receive some 200 billion dollars of social support from the various levels of government each year, which doesn’t include medical care or public education. Generally speaking before the Great Depression most social services were provided by religious charities and other private groups. Changing government policy between the 1930s and 1960s saw the emergence of a welfare state, similar to many Western European countries. Most programs from that era are still in use, although many were scaled back during the 1990s as government priorities shifted towards reducing debt and deficit.

There is an annual marathon held in my part of the world every summer. The local community church provides water for those involved in the St. Clair River Run each July. It is often very warm and humid, so the water is a blessing for those involved. The Bible teaches that life is a journey with Jesus, and as we walk with him, He provides protection from the heat of life and provides us with everything we need to be successful in the journey. Psalm 84 is most well-known for such verses as “How lovely is your dwelling place” and “Better is one day in your courts than thousands elsewhere.” While verse 11 is not as well known, it is a great blessing: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” These are great promises. David is painting a picture of a journey in Israel. In the cool of the night, God gives light and heat. In the heat of the day, He is a shield from the elements. He provides the greatest gifts – grace and glory – and promises that He will provide all we need for the journey. As you journey through life, walking with the Lord Jesus, you can count on these same blessings. God will protect, provide, and journey with you today, as you walk with the Lord.
