Words from the Heart for Monday August 7th, 2017
I’m asking the Lord for only one thing. Here is what I want. I want to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. I want to look at the beauty of the Lord. I want to worship him in his temple.
Psalm 27:4 (NIRV)
I Want to Look At the Beauty of the Lord
There are many things to plan to do on a holiday! This verse names one thing as the very favourite. It’s not so much about a place to go as it is about making a permanent place in our heart for the Lord. You can make that choice today, too!
In 2016 Conde Nast Traveler, one of the most respected travel magazines in the world, listed the ten most beautiful places in Canada. The list, and stunning photos, included such well-known places as Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Bay of Fundy in Quebec, and Perce Rock in the Gaspe in Quebec. But it also included some not so commonly known places like Outer Battery Village in St. John’s Newfoundland and Meat Cove on the northern tip of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. I have been to Meat Cove – while driving the Cabot Trail we saw it on the map and decided to drive the narrow road to reach it. It deserves to be on the list of Canada’s top ten most beautiful places.
Our society constantly seeks after beauty. Billions of dollars are spent globally each year on a wide variety of beauty treatments and cosmetics all in an attempt to make men and women more physically attractive. I have a friend who says that she has used “Oil of Delay” for many years. The Bible is very honest about the fact that physical beauty is fleeting and no matter how hard people try, and how much they pay, eventually physical beauty does fade. Once again, the world stands in opposition of the principles of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Bible speaks about the beauty of the inner life as a mirror of the beauty of the Lord. The Psalmist says this in Psalm 27:4: “I’m asking the Lord for only one thing. Here is what I want. I want to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. I want to look at the beauty of the Lord. I want to worship him in his temple.” Those who hunt for physical beauty spend lots of time in front of a mirror. In the Kingdom of God, those who seek spiritual beauty spend time gazing upon the beauty of the Lord. For it is in worship that we become more like our King and Master and spending time with Him, in His presence, allows us to become the spiritually beautiful person that mirrors the beauty of God’s love and grace.
These have been words from the heart.
