Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

Proverbs 3:7 (NRSV)

Wise in Your Own Eyes

It’s easy to be strongly convinced that our way is best! We even feel we have the right to make our own choices because we know best. Many have made really big mistakes by following their own way. Our own way could actually lead us to make a place for evil. We make exceptions for ourselves. We insist on our own way. How much better to fear the Lord and make a clean break with evil.

In the year 2000, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a new 25 cent coin called Wisdom. It shows an older man and young boy sitting and talking together. Jean Lapointe, the master of ceremonies at the unveiling said, “The Royal Canadian Mint selected a design that represents the relationship between each generation and the passing on of values, culture and wisdom. I learn a great deal from my children and grandchildren and I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge with them.”

The need for mentoring has become more evident as a generation of leaders is passing on the baton to younger men and women. The wisdom of experience is invaluable. If this is the case with human wisdom, how much more are those of us who know the Lord Jesus as Saviour, and who love His word, called to share the wisdom that God gives with the next generation? King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 3:7: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.” True wisdom begins by recognizing the holiness of God, His perfect righteousness and His glory. Like Isaiah the prophet whose life was transformed in the presence of Almighty God, we need to catch sight of Him in all of His majesty. When we do, our own sin will become so evident, and we will long for His cleansing and His power. This is where true wisdom begins. When was the last time you caught a glimpse of the glory of God? If it has been a while, turn your heart back to Him, worship Him and seek Him through His word. And His wisdom will become yours.

These have been words from the heart.
