Words from the Heart for Friday September 15th, 2017
Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Proverbs 8:10-11 (NIV)
More Precious Than Rubies
What do we value? What price tag would we put on the things the Lord is teaching us? Do we place wisdom as “more precious” than costly gems? Don’t trade off godly wisdom for cheap shortcuts. Choose the lifestyle of those provisions of God that bring eternal benefit.
A Blood-Red Ruby and a deep blue sapphire are crystals of the same, relatively common mineral corundum. Corundum occurs in colours that vary from blue to red, green, violet, orange, yellow, and clear. Red gemstone varieties are called ruby: all the other coloured gems are referred to as sapphires. Canada produces an abundance of corundum in a variety of colours and hues, but rubies have not yet been discovered. The closest location to Canada where rubies have been found is in Greenland.
The principles of the kingdom of God are always diametrically opposed to the principles of the kingdoms of this world. This has always been the case. The world tells us to get as much of the material wealth that it offers and then we will be happy and prosperous. The Kingdom of God tells us that this is a lie, and we see that it is by how miserable many of the world’s most wealthy and popular are. King Solomon, who had been given the choice to either be wealthy or wise, chose wisdom. Because he did, he writes these wise precepts in Proverbs 8:10-11: “Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” Those of us who love the Lord Jesus have learned a long time ago that the instructions we are given by God in the Bible are worth far more than silver. We look to gain the knowledge of God’s word more than we chase after the wealth of this world, and we have found that God’s wisdom is indeed more precious than rubies.
These have been words from the heart.
