God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

Genesis 1:16 (NRSV)

Two Great Lights

Oh the wonder of the night sky! Maybe it has been on a camping trip or even from your own backyard when you have looked up into the sky and have seen again the sparkling stars. There’s a wonder to the night sky that points to the divine design by an amazing God. Take time tonight to check the sky. Pause and give praise to the awesome God who is the Creator.

One of the greatest displays of northern lights took place last September. Following a powerful eruption from the sun, the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center had forecast high geomagnetic activity, which would result in northern lights. While it didn’t manifest on the first predicted night, two more eruptions — which were much stronger — slammed into Earth the following night. The display was seen across Canada, even as far south as southern Ontario. There were reports that they were also seen across parts of the northern states.

We would be in a real pickle if it wasn’t for the two great orbs in the sky – the sun and the moon. The sun provides energy and it is the energy that gives life. The moon provides stability to the earth, keeping our planet from tilting precipitously. Even though the ancients didn’t understand the science behind the sun and moon, they did recognize the importance of these two bodies on their daily lives. Genesis 1:16 says “God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.” God built into all creation the rhythms of life. We need times of sleep to rejuvenate and we need the energy that the sun provides during the day. So there is day and there is night. Our physical and emotional health depends on a good night’s sleep and the warmth and energy the sun provides. Those who don’t get enough sleep become emotionally unstable. Those who don’t get the energy the sun provides become depressed and suffer physically. Through the moon and the sun God has provided the foundation for our emotional and physical health.
