Words from the Heart for Friday December 8th, 2017
Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.” The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.”
Luke 1:18-19 (NRSV)
I Stand in the Presence of God
When Zechariah heard the angel’s message, he could not believe such wonderful news. The angel Gabriel explained that the message was from the Lord Himself. We, too, may doubt that the Lord can use us. Ask for faith to say “yes” to Him.
Josiah Henson was born as a slave in Maryland in 1789. He eventually made his way to freedom in Canada, founding the British American Institute in Dawn Township, now a part of Dresden, Ontario. He gained fame when it became known that his life was the foundation of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s impactful anti-slavery book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. He visited Britain several times, and while there in 1877 he gladly accepted Queen Victoria invitation to drop by Buckingham Palace for a visit.
Sometimes God asks seemingly impossible things of His people. He does this so that we will have to trust Him completely and not depend on our own power. This was the case when the old prophet, Zechariah, was told by the angel that he and his wife Elizabeth would conceive and bear a son whom they were to name John. He was the one promised long before to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah, whose name would be Jesus. We read Zacharias’ response in Luke 1:16-19: “Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.” The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.” The power in this story is seen in the words of the angel: “I stand in the presence of God.” Gabriel saw God’s power and glory every day. He knew more than just about anyone else what God could do. Remember that when God asks something big of you.
These have been words from the heart.
