Wawa, Ontario, about half way between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay on the Trans Canada Highway, is most famous for its giant Canada Goose. 50,000 visitors a year stop at the Goose and have done so since the first goose was unveiled in 1960. Goose 2 came twenty years later. And just before Canada Day this year, with great joy and celebration, Wawa Goose 3 was unveiled. An array of celebrations marked the day, including drummers and a performance by Fred Eaglesmith, best known for his quirky songs about rural Canada. The new bird was made of stainless steel in Trenton, Ont. for about $300,000. It’s about 8.5 meters tall with a wingspan of about six meters and was put together in pieces under a parachute net so as not ruin the surprise at the unveiling.

We Canadians, on the whole, are a pretty reserved lot. We don’t tend to get over excited about very much, except maybe the gold medal hockey game at the Olympics. There are exceptions, however. We get pretty excited about the safe arrival of a new baby, or a job promotion or a financial windfall. Weddings tend to get our excitement level raised a bit, although most Canadian weddings are pretty tame compared to say the average Israeli or Greek wedding. Psalm 118:15 speaks of a time when all who love the Lord ought to get excited: “Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: ‘The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!’” If God’s blessings in our lives can’t get us excited I don’t know what will. He pours out His love and grace upon us every day, and now and then He performs a miracle in our lives that causes us to break out into unrestrained praise. When was the last time shouts of joy and victory were heard from your “tent”, from your life or your home? Your children, your friends and family, your neighbours ought to hear from your lips gratitude for all that the Lord has done for you. We are called to let our praise pour forth. Find time today to praise the Lord for what He is doing in you and let others know how faithful He has been in your life.
