Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
Psalm 34:8 (NLT)
Taste and See that the Lord is Good
You never know how good something is until you actually taste it. Others can tell you. They can give a great recommendation. They can even tell you all about the recipe and the products used. However, it is not until you taste it that you know for yourself. Taste and see for yourself that the Lord is good. You will joyfully have the evidence then that what He has said is true!
I was speaking at a men’s retreat on February 23, 2014. We got up early on Sunday morning, grabbed a quick breakfast and sat down in front of a big screen TV. We weren’t alone that morning. More than 15 million other Canadians were in front of their TV that morning. It is quite likely that you did too. The Sochi Winter Olympics were on and Canada was playing Sweden in the gold medal hockey game. CBC said that between 7:10 and 9:10 that morning, 90% of the national viewing audience had tuned into the game and in the Vancouver/Victoria and Edmonton/Calgary markets, fully 97% of the available viewing audience was tuned into the game. In case you don’t remember, and most of you will, Canada defeated Sweden 3-0 to win their second straight gold medal.
I was recently in the Philippines and we stopped along the rural road at a stand that was selling fruit I had never tasted before. The outside looked interesting, but it didn’t really excite me. When they cut it open it was a bright purple with tons of seeds. I was still unsure. Then I bit into it. In case you ever are offered dragon fruit – eat it! It is unbelievably delicious. If I hadn’t bitten into it, I would never have known how good it is. Psalm 34:8 give us some great advice. King David says “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” God gives us permission to “bite into Him” so to speak. We will never know how loving He is until we ask Him, in faith, to show us His love. We will never know how powerful He is until we pray that He will empower us to live a life that honours Him. We will never know how wonderful a Saviour He is until we repent of our sin and place our faith in Jesus Christ. What a God we have, who tells us to put our trust in Him to see just how good He is. And what is the result? David says it is joy. And it’s a joy like no other. How have you tasted and seen the goodness of God today?
These have been words from the heart.
