Words From The Heart: Special Weekly Reflection #40
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
Welcome to 2021!
2020 is now in the history books, and no one is sad to see it leave. The entire world has been in an upheaval for the past 10 months. More than enough families are mourning the loss of loved ones to COVID-19. People have been unable to visit with family members, not only in other countries, but even in distant parts of Canada. Frontline workers are exhausted and have been working on adrenaline for far too long. It’s great to look in the rearview mirror from the first week of January 2021 and see 2020 quickly disappearing into the history books.
So, what lies ahead? I am not a prophet or a prognosticator. But I am a student of the Word of God, and I know what God has promised His people. Centuries before Jesus walked on our planet, God inspired a prophet to write this in Isaiah 43:19: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
God asks a question here that is important. He says that He is doing a new thing and then asks if we perceive it. God is always doing a new thing. He sent Jesus to do a new thing in the life of each of us who have placed our faith and trust in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that if anyone is in Christ they are a new creation – the old is gone and the new has come. On the cross, He bore the punishment our sin deserves and when we ask Him to remove our sin He does so, transforming our entire lives.
But He is not just Lord of those who have trusted Him as Saviour. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the Creator of the whole world, and He is redeeming all of His creation. He is doing a new thing in this world of His, and He has 2021 solidly under His control. We long for Him to do a new thing in this world as He prepares for His second Advent. Do you perceive that He is at work in this world?
He promises that He is making a way in the wilderness. If you find yourself in a wilderness, He will direct your life through and out of that wilderness if you will trust Him to. If 2020 was a dry time for you spiritually, Jesus promises streams in that wasteland. As you enter a new year, with 2021 ahead, do you perceive the new thing that God is doing in your life? Watch as a stream of His presence begins to flow from within you.
For all of us, Jesus is doing a new thing. In our lives and in our world. I’m excited to watch Him make a way throughout 2021 and to experience those refreshing streams in my life. You can share that excitement too!
