Words From The Heart: Special Weekly Reflection #26
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God … you are precious and honoured in my sight, and … I love you.”
from Isaiah 43:2-4 (NIV)
We were created to be loved. In fact, the Bible is a love story between the Creator God and His creation, and particularly the greatest of His creation, the human race. He expresses His love in so many ways. He freed the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt and provided them with food and water. He provided the law so they would know what it meant to belong to a holy God. Every time they wandered from Him, He sent judges and prophets. In all of this He was expressing His love for His people. And then, finally, as John 3:16 says, God loved the world so much that He sent His one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
In all that He did, and does, He expressed His love. But one of the most precious verses in the Bible is found in Isaiah 43:2-4. He says this to His people: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God … you are precious and honoured in my sight, and … I love you.”
This is God speaking directly into your life … “I love you.” Do not ever doubt God’s love for you. As we continue to deal with the challenges of the pandemic, making decisions that we never thought we would face, missing loved ones whom we can’t visit because we would have to cross a border, concerned because this unseen virus can seemingly attack at will. Through Isaiah the prophet, God speaks into your life and your situation.
Did you notice how He expresses His love here? He does it in two ways. First, He promises that no matter what we are passing through at the moment – deep waters and fire – He will be with us. His presence guarantees His love for us. I’ve been married for over 44 years. Over those decades my wife has been with me through the passing of both my dad and mom and hospitalization for a heart attack and a ruptured appendix. In all of this, and in so many other ways as she has stood by me, she has proved her love.
God is with you. He has never left you. Through your faith in Jesus Christ you can count on God’s abiding presence. This would be enough for us to be assured of His love. But God then speaks the words we long to hear … I love you.
The God we know through faith in Jesus Christ loves us. He loves you and He loves me. He tells you He does. Do you hear Him say it to you? Whatever you are facing today, hear Him speak to you today these words from His mouth … I love you.
